Fugro has transferred their self-elevating platform (SEP) Amberjack to Japan to meet the country’s growing demand for offshore wind geotechnical services. Under Japanese regulations, vessels registered in Japan follow a more streamlined procedure than foreign-flagged vessels when deployed for fieldwork, so this move will speed up mobilisation to project sites and allow faster delivery of Fugro’s accurate Geo-data to the country’s developing offshore wind industry.

The Amberjack was reflagged in December 2023 and is now based in Tokyo, from where it will be deployed to wind farm projects in Japan and provide clients with geotechnical borehole drilling, high-quality sampling, and a range of in situ tests, such as downhole cone penetration tests (CPTs) and standard penetration tests (SPTs). Fugro’s Amberjack also delivers downhole geophysical logging for preliminary and detailed geotechnical surveys, and cable route surveys. All of the SEP’s capabilities comply with international and Japanese geotechnical standards down to a maximum water depth of 42 m.

Junichi Kuwamura, Fugro’s Country Manager for Japan, said: “Transferring the Fugro Amberjack to Japan will help us respond faster to our country’s growing demand for geotechnical SEP services. The Japanese government targets 10 GW of offshore wind developments by 2030 and 30 GW to 45 GW by 2040. Our Geo-data solutions support the energy transition and are helping to make renewable energy the main source of power in Japan, and we’re proud to have this new asset ready to accelerate the development of Japanese offshore wind farms.”

My claim to fame on the renewables front is that I co-founded All-Energy, now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference. It was acquired by RX Global in 2011 and I am retained as a consultant creating the 600+/- speaker conference; as an ambassador for the show; and also handling PR for it. I was awarded MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2014; and became a Fellow the Society of Underwater Technology that same year and was its President in 2021-2022. Back in 2012 I was awarded the Scottish Green Energy ‘Outstanding Contribution’ Award. In addition to my stimulating and exciting role as Project Director of All-Energy, I also run a PR company, something I have done (scarily!) for over 50 years. My clients are all unique and so are their marketing requirements. Once I understand the end goal, I provide a range of marketing solutions to achieve those objectives In addition to All-Energy my clients include the Fugro Group; IMCA - the International Marine Contractors Association; and ad hoc work for a number of organisations.
