Covering just 1% of the utilised agricultural area (UAA) with agrivoltaic systems could result in 944 GW direct current of installed capacity. Combining farming and solar photovoltaic electricity production – known as agrivoltaics – on a mere 1% of EU utilised agricultural area (UAA) could help to surpass the EU’s 2030 targets – 720 GW direct current – for solar energy generation. This innovative multi land-use application shows great potential: unlike conventional ground mounted photovoltaic systems, in agrivoltaic applications the panels are installed in such a way that agricultural activities, such as growing crops, grass or fruit, remain the primary…

Italian researchers have assessed the global PV supply chain and say that the EU climate strategy should foster European production of renewable energy technologies. Researchers at Italy’s Roma Tre University have looked at global PV supply chain dependencies, with a focus on China, the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and the United States from 2007 to 2021. The scientists focused on the long-term evolution of trade and technological hierarchies, mapping the global solar supply chain in terms of trade and technology. They said that achieving environmental targets through a “buy from abroad” strategy will have consequences for technological and productive…

Germany plans to punish companies and households in regions that have been slow to expand renewables with higher grid fees, a move that aims to relieve the cost burden for those living near large wind and solar facilities. “We want to achieve a fairer distribution of costs,” said Klaus Müller, president of the country’s grid regulator. “In regions that generate significantly more renewable electricity than they consume, the costs of converting the grids are considerable.” Germany currently produces most of its renewable energy in the windy north, while the grid is being expanded so the bulk of that power can be…

A new “agrivoltaics” initiative looking to prove the commercial viability of integrating solar power plants with agriculture has won the favour of Brussels. The EU is backing German renewable energy company BayWa, in a first-of-its-kind scheme that could be a win-win for farmers and the climate. In order to develop the project, BayWa has secured €6.5mn from the EU’s LIFE Programme (which has a total of €5.43bn available for the period 2021 to 2027). Armed with fresh funding, the company looks to build six so-called agrivoltaics projects across five European countries by 2027. Agrivoltaics involves combining solar power generation and agriculture on…
