Bioenergy produced from agricultural, forestry and organic waste feedstock continues to be the main source of renewable energy in the EU, accounting for about 59% of renewable energy consumption in 2021, according to a new Commission report on bioenergy sustainability. Published this week as part of the 2023 State of the Energy Union Report and as required by the Governance Regulation, the report notes that primary solid biofuels (70.3%) represent the largest share of bioenergy, followed by liquid biofuels (12.9%), biogas/ bio-methane (10.1%) and renewable share of municipal waste (6.6%). Floating solar panels on reservoirs could produce three times as much electricity as the entire EU, a new study has shown. Solar panels are one of the cheapest and most efficient ways of generating electricity but they also take up a lot of space. Swedish battery and storage specialist Northvolt has developed a sodium-ion battery it claims to be a “cost-effective’’ alternative in energy storage to lithium-ion or other technologies. Spain’s Grenergy Renovables has unveiled plans for a major 4.1GWh energy storage project and combined 1GW solar farm in Chile. Announced as part of its company’s Capital Markets Day, Grenergy said that construction on Oasis de Atacama Chile has started in the north of the country.
