Fortum is launching a significant development project that aims to manufacture high-value products from agro residues and woody biomass to replace the use of fossil and other environmentally taxing raw materials. The project received significant support from Business Finland for a 14.4 million-euro, two-year project in which Fortum and technology and refining partners will conduct research with the aim to create an industrial ecosystem in which biomass is refined in biovillages through collaboration between the companies. Climeon has received an order from Iwana Power GK of Heat Power modules worth SEK 40 million. The Heat Power modules will be deployed as a geothermal power plant in the Gifu Prefecture in central Japan and are to be delivered in 2019. In 2010, a pair of MIT materials scientists helped launch 24M, promising to deliver cheaper, better batteries by stripping out inactive materials in the electrodes. Of the three sectors, transport has the lowest penetration of renewables. While renewable energy in transport is expected to grow by 19% between 2018 and 2023, the overall renewable share remains small. In transport demand, renewables grew from 3.4% in 2017 to just 3.8% in 2023. Even so, renewables account for 12% of transport fuel demand growth. The Balanced Energy Network (BEN) project, featuring Cranfield University, has won The Engineer’s ‘Collaborate to Innovate’ Energy and Environment Award.
