US company General Electric has created a wind turbine that is so powerful that it can power a household for two full days with only one spin of its mighty blades. That’s great news, because we need to get going with creating as much clean and renewable energy as we possibly can before the ice caps melt and we all end up in more serious danger than we’re already in. These incredible wind-powered generators are part of a project called Vineyard Wind, which will be installed off the coast of Massachusetts on the eastern side of the USA. That project will utilise a number of these remarkable…

Washington DC – According to a review by the SUN DAY Campaign of data just released by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), renewable energy sources (i.e., biomass, geothermal, hydropower, solar, wind) have dominated new U.S. electrical generating capacity additions in the first eleven months of 2020. Combined, they accounted for almost 71% (14,734 MW) of the 20,803 MW of new utility-scale capacity reported to have been added thus far in 2020. Year-to-date, wind (8,042 MW) and solar (6,485 MW) have each contributed more new generating capacity than has natural gas (6,039 MW). [1] FERC’s latest monthly “Energy Infrastructure Update”…

Yadlamalka, South Australia will take centre stage in the race to decarbonize our global electricity system when the world’s largest solar-powered vanadium flow battery (VFB) comes online there next year. In this pioneering project, a VFB supplied by Invinity Energy Systems (LSE:IES) will charge from a solar PV array and provide power to the local grid on demand. Yadlamalka Energy Trust has developed this innovative $20m AUD project, combining an 8 MWh VFB with a 6 MWp solar array, to unlock low-cost, low-emission energy for the Australian grid, producing approximately 10 GWh of ‘dispatchable’ solar power each year. The vanadium…

There is a race to 1000km battery-electric vehicles (BEV) and beyond. For aircraft, that means safety and intercontinental travel from the longer possible battery durations. Meanwhile, the premature launch of vertical take-off air taxis will end in tears because they currently have a mere one-hour battery duration. Longer range on the road means no more vehicles stopping to charge. On the sea, it means energy-independent solar boats can lead to energy-independent ships. Range is considerably reduced by battery age, heat, and cold, so more leeway is really precious. See the IDTechEx report, “Li-ion Batteries 2020-2030”. Increasing energy density involves packaging,…
