US scientists are testing layers of cyber defences from component level and designing new grid topology and control systems to counter the threats posed by rising renewable energy capacity. In January, the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) launched a new Cybersecurity Program Office (CPO) to tackle the impact of rising renewable energy capacity and distributed energy systems on grid security. Soaring seabed lease prices in the UK have stunned the offshore wind market but developers expect intense competition in contract auctions will drive costs lower. Bullish bidding in the UK’s latest offshore wind leasing round highlighted the soaring demand for offshore wind projects. The UK Crown Estate allocated six offshore wind leases in England and Wales to four different groups – including the first UK project for oil major BP – for a total capacity of 8 GW. Planning consent has been given for EDF Renewables’ (EDF R) Sutton Bridge solar farm. South Holland District Council has given permission for the project to go ahead after a period of consultation with local people. This will be the first large scale solar project developed by EDF Renewables in the UK. The 49.9 MW solar farm will be capable of generating enough low carbon renewables electricity for the domestic needs of 16,100 households* annually, saving around 21,000 tonnes** of carbon dioxide emissions each year. On 3 November 2020, Neste announced that it would acquire Bunge Loders Croklaan’s refinery plant in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The refinery plant is located next to Neste’s existing biorefinery and it consists of a pretreatment facility, tank farm, jetties and has a pipeline connection to Neste’s site. The acquisition has been approved by regulatory authorities, and the transaction has been completed on 1 March 2021. Blue Gem Wind, the joint venture between Total, one of the world’s largest energy companies, and Simply Blue Energy, has submitted an environmental scoping report for Valorous, a proposed 300 MW floating offshore windfarm. Karlsruhe/Wiesbaden. For its Klimavest impact fund, Commerz Real has acquired 49.9 percent of a portfolio of fourteen onshore wind farms belonging to EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, comprising 47 wind turbines and a total capacity of 133 megawatts. Located at various sites in the German states of Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, the wind farms were developed and built by EnBW and the majority of them went into operation in 2017.
