The US$2 million waste-to-energy project will be developed and operated by the PhilBio

All the biodegradable waste in the city’s sanitary landfill will be put to good use once the Waste-to-Energy project of the city government and the Philippine Bio-Sciences Company, Inc. (PhilBio) becomes operational.
Recently, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Waste-To-Energy project was held with City Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn and Ian Alvarado of PhilBio and Red Constantino of the Institute of Climate and Sustainable Cities.
The project will initially serve the power requirements of the electric feed jeeps and tricycles that will begin to ply the streets of Puerto Princesa City once the project commence in a year’s time. It is the vision of the City Mayor to make Puerto Princesa City as the first “carbon-negative” city in the world.
The US$2 million waste-to-energy project will be developed and operated by the PhilBio utilizing the recovered methane gas from the advanced anaerobic digestion in the Sanitary Landfill in Bgy. Sta. Lourdes. The captured methane gas will be used as fuel to generate electricity. The project will initially generate 350 kilowatt energy but with a capacity of 1 megawatt electricity.
The project is in line with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s program to develop alternative uses of energy to lessen dependence on imported and polluting fuels.
