I let you know a few weeks ago that we have a number of new speakers for Opportunities for Large-Scale Integration of Electric Vehicles. So I wanted to get in touch now to let you know a bit more about what one of them, David Densley of SSE, will be speaking about.
Last week I spoke to David about SSE’s Electric Vehicle Programme. Below is a snapshot of the interview. If you’re interested in following the whole discussion you can download the full interview for free on the event website.
What do you believe is the biggest challenge facing utility companies who are developing electric vehicles?
“The biggest one is centered on domestic recharging facilities and ensuring that these do not overload the network. If every house had an electric vehicle and charged it at the same time then the network would not be able to cope. However, our initial trials indicate that people actually do not all charge at the same time and with technology such as Smart Grids coming out now, we should be able to manage the charging time more effectively.”
What is the most exciting project that you are working on at the moment?
“The electric Mini-E is the most exciting – it’s a great car and it’s a very surprising car. Everyone that you talk to about electric vehicles has a preconception of milk-floats and slow unexciting cars, but once they jump in and drive this car, they are blown away by its performance. Even Jeremy Clarkson who had one for evaluation, ran with the headline in The Sunday Times, “Sizzling sandals this is one hot eco-chariot”, when reviewing it.”
David will elaborate on this in his talk ”Billing for EV Charging – Options and Opportunities”’ at Opportunities for Large-Scale Integration of Electric Vehicles. He is one of 19 industry pioneers who will gather to discuss and overcome the challenges of the large-scale roll-out of EVs.
