The MSPAR floating offshore wind turbine foundation, developed by South Korea’s Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) and Netherlands-based Monobase Wind, has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV.
The MSPAR foundation, a hybrid of semi-submersible and SPAR foundation design, is engineered for full assembly at the quayside. This foundation is capable of supporting 15-25 MW offshore wind turbines in water depths exceeding 80 metres, said Monobase Wind.
According to the developers, its design addresses the complexities of onshore logistics, optimising the use of local supply chains and practical quayside assembly.
Following the AiP achievement, Monobase Wind and Daewoo E&C are now gearing up for a full-scale demonstration of the MSPAR foundation, scheduled for 2026/2027.
The collaboration between the two companies began in 2021, focusing on advancing the technology for floating offshore wind turbine foundations.
In March 2022, the partners completed conceptual design, model tests at the Oceanide facilities in France, and basic design for their MSPAR foundation.
