On 16 January 2012, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) agreed on collaborating to develop a joint renewable energy policies and measures database. The joint IEA/IRENA database aims to expand the scope of the existing IEA dataset on the basis of IRENA’s global membership, without unnecessary duplication.

The joint database can provide an overview of global renewable energy policy development, as well as country-specific policy profiles, helping to address increasing demand from policy makers, researchers and the general public for accurate, timely, easily accessible information on renewable energy policies and measures.

At present, the joint IEA/IRENA database contains over 1,622 data entries on renewable energy policies and measures, from 106 countries around the world. Collaboration between the IEA and IRENA has already resulted in 24 new countries being added to the database. Several more are expected to be added, as countries around the world increasingly implement policies and measures to promote renewable energy at the national and local levels.
