High-voltage engineering firm eyes US offshore wind entry

UK-based high-voltage engineering specialist Ventus Energy has opened its first two locations in the US.

Both are on the east coast, in New York City and in the mid-Atlantic state of Virginia.

The main office is in Brooklyn, in New York, close to Equinor’s South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, the under-construction hub for offshore wind.

Lee Glendening has been named president, and Les Nutter is vice president. Klaus Duttine of Ventus’ parent company Topp Holdings is also to be a vice president.

“This expansion marks an exciting chapter for Ventus Energy. With our UK division growing significantly and high-profile projects emerging on the east coast of America, establishing a permanent presence felt like the natural next step to better support our clients,” said Glendening.

“Our new offices in Brooklyn and Virginia enable us to meet the increasing demand for offshore wind services in this region and this milestone reflects our commitment to helping achieve global renewable energy goals,” he added.

Ventus makes its entry into the US offshore wind market at a vulnerable moment for the nascent sector. Analysts have suggested[1] that president-elect Donald Trump – a long–time opponent of wind power, especially offshore wind – may prevent further seabed leases being held or further projects being approved or be more receptive to lawsuits against projects.
