GEN-I and SUNOTEC have announced a significant partnership aimed at advancing battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Southeast Europe. The five-year agreement, signed on November 12, 2025, will see GEN-I managing two substantial battery storage facilities currently under construction by SUNOTEC in Bulgaria. The first facility will have a capacity of 150 MW and a storage capacity of 379 MWh, while the second will feature a capacity of 50 MW and a storage capacity of 126 MWh. Both facilities are expected to be operational by the end of March 2026.

As part of this collaboration, GEN-I will act as the exclusive asset optimizer and trading partner for the battery systems. This role includes overseeing the charging and discharging processes of the batteries, ensuring their participation in wholesale intraday and day-ahead markets, as well as ancillary service mechanisms. GEN-I will utilize its expertise in real-time dispatching, market optimization, and revenue management to enhance the performance of the battery systems, supported by algorithmic tools available around the clock.

The partnership is structured around a long-term revenue-sharing model, which aligns the interests of both GEN-I and SUNOTEC. This model aims to maximize market value while ensuring stable operations and compliance with regulatory standards. Igor Koprivnikar, a member of GEN-I’s management board, highlighted the importance of this partnership as a milestone for both companies, emphasizing the potential for increased efficiency and sustainability in the region’s energy system.

The collaboration combines SUNOTEC’s engineering and construction expertise with GEN-I’s advanced capabilities in energy trading and optimization. This synergy is expected to enhance the entire lifecycle of battery energy storage assets, from development through to operational management and market integration, ultimately benefiting investors and contributing to a more resilient energy infrastructure in Southeast Europe.

Kaloyan Velichkov, Founder and CEO of SUNOTEC, noted that this agreement is a critical component of the company’s long-term energy storage strategy. He expressed the importance of collaborating with experienced partners like GEN-I to build a robust foundation for their Independent Power Producer (IPP) strategy and to strengthen energy infrastructure across Europe.

Both companies are poised to play a pivotal role in the transition towards a more sustainable energy system, leveraging their combined expertise to navigate the evolving landscape of energy storage and trading in the region.
