South Korean maritime service company MARCON has secured approval in principle (AiP) from the Korean Register (KR) for its hybrid crew transfer vessel (CTV), a passenger and cargo transport vessel dedicated to offshore wind farms.
The CTV is expected to resolve environmental regulation issues by adopting an eco-friendly hybrid electric propulsion system using batteries while reducing fuel costs and supporting safer offshore wind farm operations.
The key components of the vessel include a hybrid and energy storage system (ESS) provided by Hanwha Aerospace, a linear jet propulsion unit and hybrid CTV power conversion devices, an integrated Power & Energy Management System (PEMA), and a generator supplied by YusinHR.
The immersion-type ESS, supplied by Hanwha Aerospace, is based on a lithium-ion battery that uses an insulating liquid immersion method. This improves cooling effects, prevents thermal runaway transfer, and extinguishes fire.
The linear jet, provided by JusinHR, is an eco-friendly propulsion system with a high efficiency of up to 70 per cent, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 25 knots.
According to MARCON representatives, the electric hybrid CTV is expected to reduce operating time by about 34 per cent and carbon dioxide emissions by about 70 per cent compared to the existing internal combustion engine propulsion systems.
The construction of the CTV already began at a Korean shipyard last month, with its launch planned for next year.
