A compressed biogas plant is set to be established in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district with an investment of Rs 60 crore, as announced by a government official on Tuesday. A tripartite concession agreement was signed on Monday between the Bhilai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
Earlier this year, in March, a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao, involving the municipal corporations of Raipur and Bhilai, the CBDA, and BPCL to set up compressed biogas plants in both Raipur and Durg districts.
According to the MoU, BPCL will invest around Rs 100 crore to establish CBG plants in the Raipur and Bhilai municipal corporation areas. Under the recent concession agreement, BPCL will invest Rs 60 crore to set up a plant at the trenching ground in Jamul town, within the Bhilai Municipal Corporation area.
This plant will convert approximately 150 metric tonnes of solid waste generated daily in the municipal area and nearby urban bodies in Durg district into biofuel. It is also projected to create 30,000 man-days of employment annually, both directly and indirectly.
The official noted that the organic manure produced as a byproduct of the compressed biogas plant will promote organic farming. The plant is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment and helping the state progress toward net-zero emissions through the use of CBG.
Recognizing the significant potential for generating biofuels, particularly compressed biogas from urban solid waste, the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority has been actively working to advance this initiative, the official added.
