Unveiled at WindEnergy 2024 Hamburg in Germany (24-27 September), CRRC’s 20MW floating wind turbine has a maximum blade tip height of 320 metres and a swept area of 53,000m2 (equivalent to seven standard football fields). It generates 40kWh of electricity per rotation at full load wind speed, according to the company.
Coming less than a month after Mingyang installed its 20MW offshore wind prototype[1], CRRC’s new unit is the latest example of a Chinese OEM developing ever larger offshore turbines.
CRRC’s full turbine range spans 1.5MW to 12MW for onshore wind and 8MW to 20MW for offshore applications.
It produces key components such as generators, blades, tower barrels, converters, gearboxes and transformers, generating annual sales exceeding CNY 30 billion ($4.3 billion), according to the firm.
It offers five technological platforms for wind generators – double-fed, squirrel cage, permanent magnet direct drive (PMDD), permanent magnet semi-direct drive (PMSDD) and permanent magnet transmission system (PMTS) – with power ratings ranging from 600kW to 25MW.
