Beijing has launched an initiative aimed at becoming a global hub for the green economy, prioritizing technological innovation, industrial growth, and sustainable urban planning, with the goal set for 2035, reported China Daily.
In the first phase of the plan, by 2027, Beijing aims for a 10 percent annual increase in green technology patents, improvements in urban green infrastructure, and enhanced regional and international collaboration within the green economy.
Yang Xiuling, director of the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission, detailed the city’s plans to expedite the development of an international benchmark city for the green economy during the fifth Beijing Municipal Administrative Center Green Development Forum, which took place over the weekend.
Beijing has been implementing a green development strategy for several years, achieving significant progress, including a 60 percent reduction in PM2.5 concentrations and a 50 percent decrease in carbon emission intensity over the past decade through pollution control and carbon neutrality efforts, according to the commission.
“Beijing has abundant resources in green technology, strong financial support, and a solid foundation in green professional services, creating a favorable environment for developing a green economy,” Yang stated.
To reach the 2035 goal, the city plans to enhance its status as a global leader in the green economy by promoting innovations in technologies such as hydrogen energy, synthetic biology, and solid oxide fuel cells.
The city will encourage the growth of green industries in areas like the Daxing International Hydrogen Energy Demonstration Zone and Changping district’s Energy Valley. Additionally, Beijing will bolster functions related to green trading, product innovation, and international cooperation through the green exchange.
Hu Jiulong, deputy director of the sub-city center management committee, emphasized that green transportation plays a crucial role in supporting green development.
“Beijing is advancing the establishment of an advanced autonomous driving demonstration zone, facilitating an eco-friendly and low-carbon transformation of energy infrastructure,” Hu noted.
He also mentioned that the city is focusing on improving recycled water transmission and distribution systems.
