A project designed to cut energy consumption in the rapidly growing global Data Centre Sector has been shortlisted for a prestigious global award. The team from Heriot-Watt’s Research Centre for Carbon Solutions (RCCS) used the groundbreaking Dearman engine and were shortlisted as finalists in the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) awards. The project could see energy consumption reduce by 50%. Currently, there are around eight million private and commercial data centres globally, with the digital world predicted to grow 44 times between 2009 and 2020. Over half the electricity consumed by these centres is for cooling and the shortlisted project…
ABB will provide solar inverters to 750 railway stations in north India to reduce dependence on traditional sources of energy. Indian Railways, which runs one of the largest railway networks in the world, carries more than 8 billion passengers annually. The 750 stations are located in the busy northern Indian part of the network, one of the most used railway corridors in the world. ABB recently reached a milestone of 5 GW of solar inverters installed, supplying some 40 percent of India’s solar power at approximately 13 GW. ABB solar inverters for this project – TRIO and PVI series –…
New figures show that onshore wind is powering ahead in Northern Ireland, generating nearly a quarter of its electricity needs. The latest generation figures released by NI Electricity Networks, show that onshore wind has now passed the 1GW milestone, with 1,029MW of onshore wind connected in Northern Ireland. This year has seen significant delivery of large onshore wind projects, representing £127.4million of local investment since the beginning of 2017. The growth has contributed to official figures published this month showing that in the 12-month period from April 2016 to March 2017, onshore wind generated 22.4% of Northern Ireland’s electricity. All…
Growth in the wind energy sector is primarily driven by one market, China. The United States of America ranks second, Germany and Spain rank third and fourth, respectively. India remains in fifth position with growth almost consistently matching the global average. The contribution of offshore power continues to gain momentum. A more rapid globalisation of wind energy is becoming evident. Countries previously without wind generation capacity, or with very limited capacity, are now looking at far more ambitious plans than the early adopters considered when wind energy was in its relative infancy, and putting in place targets and fiscal incentives…
