The ASEAN region is witnessing a significant shift towards clean energy, with cross-border collaboration becoming increasingly vital. According to the ASEAN Member States (AMS) Energy Development Goals, the region aims to achieve 30% renewable energy (RE) in total primary energy supply (TPES) and a 45% RE share in installed power capacity by 2030. This ambitious target is driving a surge of investment across Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines and Thailand.
The Philippines is rapidly establishing itself as one of the most dynamic clean energy markets in the region. Levanta Renewables has recently announced a substantial investment of USD 85 million for a 166 MWp solar plus battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the Visayas region. This project is part of the country’s 4th Green Energy Auction and reflects the growing interest in renewable energy. Furthermore, Levanta is expanding its operations across Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, with a goal of achieving 1.5 GW of renewable capacity by 2028. This expansion is indicative of a broader trend, as an increasing number of Philippine energy companies are setting up procurement and liaison offices in Bangkok to facilitate sourcing equipment and connecting with global manufacturers.
Thailand, on the other hand, has positioned itself as the regional hub for clean energy, thanks to its robust industrial base and strategic location between major markets like China and India. The Thai government has implemented long-term incentives and favorable investment policies that continue to attract international investors and manufacturers from countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Europe, and the United States. Major companies have established offices and factories in Thailand, focusing on various sectors including solar energy, energy storage, electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, and smart energy solutions. For international manufacturers, Thailand serves as a gateway to ASEAN markets, providing a base for regional warehousing and after-sales support, while also connecting buyers from the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and beyond.
In light of these developments, the ASEAN Smart Energy & Energy Storage Expo 2026 (ASEE 2026) is set to take place from March 25 to 27, 2026, at the IMPACT Exhibition Center in Bangkok. This event aims to foster collaboration across the clean energy value chain, bringing together key stakeholders from the region. The Philippine Energy Research and Policy Institute (PERPI) will participate in the summit, representing the Philippine government in a keynote session. Additionally, insights on cross-border energy storage cooperation will be shared by Mr. Damien Gautheret, Business Development Manager at StB Giga Factory, Inc. from the Philippines.
As the ASEAN region continues to accelerate its energy transition, the collaboration between the Philippines and Thailand exemplifies the potential for integrated clean energy networks that can drive sustainable growth and innovation in the sector.
