Leading test and development engineering company Anecto has launched a new high power test laboratory for the wind and solar energy sectors.

Initial services will be targeted at multi-MW power converters in the wind sector to address reliability, efficiency and total cost of ownership issues as ever increasing numbers of turbines enter their “out of warranty” phase.

The new high power test facility will enable clients to better understand and reduce the likelihood of component failures.

Brian Mulholland, Anecto’s renewable energy specialist said: “Two of the most important issues facing the wind sector today are unscheduled maintenance and downtime. Any interruption to the smooth running of the wind farm has a dramatic impact on income. Our aim is to help operators predict possible component failures and have a plan in place to counteract this so that revenues can be maximised.”

He added: “Power electronics components and assemblies are the most common sources of failure in wind farms so we have decided to focus on this area of testing initially.”

The services offered by the new facility will include:

· High Power System testing services comprising Converter and Inverter assembly testing from gate driver cards to complete system tests.

· Passive component testing capabilities including very high energy capacitance measurements and IGBT and heatsink verification.

· Failure analysis, repair and warranty programs.

Since 1994 Anecto has been helping customers in the high tech sector test product reliability from its world-class testing facility in Galway. Its co-founders both worked in design teams for leading blue chip manufacturers. Anecto is committed to investing in technical knowledge and today from a total workforce of over 100, employs some fifteen highly skilled electronic and mechanical engineers with direct sector experience. A big part of their remit today is involved with working with design teams to provide product design and test solutions.
