Taiwan-based Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) has joined forces with Moondo Wind Energy (MWE) to develop an offshore wind project in the South Sea of South Korea.

The two companies have formed a joint venture called Moondo Offshore Wind Energy. This marks Synera’s entry into the South Korean market and its second expansion beyond Taiwan, following its venture into Northern Kyushu, Japan.

The new fixed-bottom offshore wind farm has already secured an Electricity Business License (EBL) from the South Korean government.

With a total capacity of 840 MW, the project is planned to be built in the waters around Geonmundo Island, Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do Province, at the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula.

In addition, SRE further announced the opening of its new office in central Seoul.

SRE’s advanced technology and extensive experience in Taiwan will ensure the successful implementation of the Moondo Offshore Wind Energy, making a significant contribution to Korea’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and achieve RE-100,” said Honglyol Song, CEO of MWE.

This month, SRE’s Taiwanese offshore wind projects made progress. The 495 MW Formosa 4, located 18 to 20 kilometres off the coast of Miaoli County, received the establishment permit^[1] from the Energy Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs.

In November, the company also submitted the administrative contract for the 800 MW Formosa 6 wind farm to Taiwan’s Energy Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs.
