Syensqo, a prominent global provider of high-performance materials and chemical solutions, has announced a significant expansion of its portfolio of certified circular specialty materials. This development comes in response to the increasing customer demand for sustainable solutions, particularly in the realm of high-performance fluids.

New Certification for Fomblin® Y

On October 8, 2026, Syensqo revealed that its Fomblin® Y product has successfully received UL Environmental Claim Validation under the UL 2809 standard. This certification marks a pivotal step in the company’s commitment to enhancing resource-efficient industrial practices and aligns with the objectives outlined in the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). The CRMA aims to bolster Europe’s resilience by promoting the circular use of strategic raw materials.

Building on Previous Achievements

This latest certification builds upon Syensqo’s earlier success in 2025, when it obtained UL Environmental Claim Validation for selected high-performance elastomers and lubricant fluids. The addition of Fomblin® Y to the certified circular portfolio in September 2026 underscores the company’s ongoing efforts to meet the growing market demand for circular solutions.

Fluorine Recovery and Sustainability Efforts

Approximately 40% of the fluorine content in the newly certified products is sourced from post-industrial recycled (PIR) hydrofluoric acid (HF) through a mass balance accounting approach. Fluorspar, the primary mineral source of fluorine, is classified as a critical raw material under the CRMA. By recovering fluorine from post-industrial waste, Syensqo is actively contributing to the CRMA’s broader goals of reducing dependency on critical raw materials and enhancing the resilience of European supply chains.

Investment in Recycling Capabilities

To further support the rising demand for circular high-performance fluorinated elastomers and fluids across various industries, Syensqo is making significant investments at its manufacturing site in Spinetta Marengo, Italy. This investment aims to enhance recycling capabilities and increase the recovery of fluorine, thereby strengthening the availability of recycled raw materials for Syensqo’s specialty polymers portfolio.

Customer-Centric Approach

Tom Wood, Vice President and Head of Product and Asset Management at Syensqo, highlighted the importance of this expansion in meeting customer needs. He stated, “Our customers are increasingly looking for high-performance materials that enable them to use resources more efficiently while strengthening the resilience of their supply chains.” The expansion of the certified Fomblin® portfolio, along with the investment in recycled fluorine recovery, reflects Syensqo’s commitment to addressing these demands on an industrial scale.

Conclusion: A Step Towards a Circular Economy

The expanded UL validation for Fomblin® Y, coupled with the investment at Spinetta Marengo, showcases Syensqo’s ongoing progress in developing circular solutions for fluorinated materials. This initiative not only helps customers increase their use of recycled raw materials but also ensures that performance and reliability are maintained in demanding industrial applications. As the industry moves towards a more sustainable future, Syensqo’s efforts exemplify the potential for innovation in the circular economy.
