Indian wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon Group has confirmed an order with JSP Green Wind for a 400MW wind project in the steel-rich Koppal region of Karnataka, India.
For the project, Suzlon will supply 127 wind turbine generators with hybrid lattice tubular towers, each having a rated capacity of 3.15MW.
The power generated will power local steel plants in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, advancing decarbonisation of energy in the region.
Steel is an important industry in India, with the country overtaking Japan as the world’s second-largest steel producer.
Odisha is the largest producer of steel in India with a capacity of 18 million tonnes per year of steel production.
Most of the steel plants of India such as Jamshedpur, Burnpur, Durgapur, Rourkela, Bhilai, and Bokaro are located in Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa and Chhattisgarh, as these states are rich in coal and iron ore deposits and are important producers of these materials.
Girish Tanti, vice chairman of Suzlon Group, commented in a release: “We are proud to partner with the Jindal Group in a bold step towards a low-carbon future, leveraging wind power to revolutionise steel production. This groundbreaking collaboration not only redefines industrial sustainability but also aligns with India’s 2070 net-zero vision. Together, we are setting a new benchmark for sustainable practices that foster growth while safeguarding the planet.”
JSP Green Wind is a special-purpose vehicle of project developer Jindal Renewables Power Private Limited. The project is aligned with Jindal’s decarbonisation goals and according to Bharat Saxena, president of Jindal Renewables: “This collaboration marks the beginning of a new era in sustainable steel production, enabling us to achieve Group’s net zero commitment by 2047.”
