SMA Solar UK, a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG, the global market leader for solar inverters, was awarded with a special merit at the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) awards 2014, in recognition of SMA’s educational program for children on renewable energy technology.
The NHIC Annual Awards have been recognising achievement in the UK housing sector since 1974. During this years’ awards ceremony, held on the 13th of November at the Gladstone Library in London, SMA Solar UK was presented with a special merit for Smork in Suntown, an SMA Solar UK educational publication, supported by the BPVA and Powering Knowledge Campaign.
Smork in Suntown represents a fresh approach to delivering facts about solar technology to children, and can be used as an educational tool by schools to capture their interest in topics including climate change and sustainability. Available free of charge to SMA UK distributors, solar photovoltaic installers and schools, the book brings alive SMA’s very own character, Smork, to engage children aged 5-10 years old and effectively communicate the importance of using renewable energy sources such as solar energy and the impact that it will have on the environment.
Commenting on SMA’s recognition, Paul Boylin, Marketing Manager, SMA Solar UK, noted: “ At SMA we are proud to play a role in empowering children to embrace solar power and to become active advocates of renewable energy beyond the classroom.”
Ian Halton, NAPIT Training and Business Relationship Director, also commented “Having been involved in selecting SMA for this merit presentation, I was thoroughly impressed by the innovation, ambition and noble aims of their work over the past year. Coordinating with the BPVA and the Department of Energy and Climate Change, they produced and distributed educational material, which explained the importance and benefits of solar PV to children in simple terms, to 22,000 schools across the UK. Ensuring the next generation are switched on about the role renewable technologies can play in our energy mix is a key factor the UK’s drive to reduce its carbon emissions and build a more robust green economy. SMA has put a great amount of time and effort into a project designed to work towards these goals. It is a project that the solar industry could truly benefit from and for which they are truly deserving of this recognition.”
