SgurrEnergy lights up development of the UK’s largest solar power projects

Popular Articles

Glasgow-based renewable energy expert SgurrEnergy, part of Wood Group, has played an important role in the development of a number of the UK’s largest solar power projects.

Working on behalf of the developer, Low Carbon Solar and investors, the SgurrEnergy team provided key technical advice on a 22MW solar photovoltaic (PV) portfolio of power plants located in Cornwall and Gloucester.

The plants, all constructed in 2011, are amongst the largest in the UK and will provide enough electricity to power around 7,000 homes per year.

SgurrEnergy’s Senior Renewable Energy Consultant, Adam Spearey, said “The construction period of less than 10 weeks per plant was especially impressive given the scale of the projects. In total over 80,000 solar panels were installed on an area covering 100 acres, which is equivalent to 50 football pitches.”

“The very challenging time constraints placed on the projects by the Government’s decision to introduce a deadline in which to obtain a feed-in-tariff placed a considerable amount of pressure on all parties involved. Both developer and contractors deserve immense credit for delivering quality projects to much shortened timelines,” he added.

“It has been great to make use of the experience we have gained through involvement in many megawatts of solar PV development across the globe on projects getting built right here on our doorstep.”

John Cole, Director at Low Carbon Solar said “SgurrEnergy has supported us at each stage during development, construction, commissioning and operation. Adam and the team have brought a depth of PV knowledge and expertise to our projects. We look forward to working with them on other projects.”

SgurrEnergy’s Solar team is currently acting as Owner’s Engineer and Lender’s Engineer on projects based in Belgium, France, India and South Africa.

SgurrEnergy was founded ten years ago by technical director Ian Irvine and implementation director Steve McDonald with the aim of building the world’s largest renewable energy consultancy.

Headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland, SgurrEnergy currently has international offices in China (Beijing), Canada (Vancouver), India (Pune), France (Paris), Ireland (Wexford) and the US (Portland).

SgurrEnergy is part of Wood Group, an international energy services company, and operates as part of the Wood Group Kenny business unit.

Wood Group is an international energy services company with $5.5bn sales, employing more than 38,000 people worldwide and operating in 50 countries. The Group has three businesses – Engineering, Wood Group PSN and Wood Group GTS – providing a range of engineering, production support, maintenance management and industrial gas turbine overhaul and repair services to the oil & gas, and power generation industries worldwide.
