On October 8, 2025, the MICHELIN Guide announced its inaugural selection of Key distinctions for hotels in the Nordic countries, marking a significant recognition for the hospitality sector in this region. Among the 38 hotels selected, 11 are located in Norway, with seven of these situated in the picturesque Fjord Norway area. Notably, two of these hotels received the prestigious Two Keys designation, while the remaining five were awarded One Key.
The Two-Key hotels include the Walaker Hotel, which holds the title of Norway’s oldest family-run hotel, established in 1640. Nestled in the charming village of Solvorn, the Walaker Hotel is celebrated for its blend of history, art, and warm hospitality, all set against the backdrop of the stunning Sognefjord. The second Two-Key hotel, Storfjord Hotel, is a handcrafted log structure located near Ålesund. It offers guests a unique combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern comfort, along with breathtaking views of the fjord.
The One-Key hotels recognized in this selection are diverse in character and offerings. Elva Hotel, located in Voss, provides a memorable experience with its focus on nature, design, and local culture, catering to outdoor enthusiasts with a range of activities. Eilert Smith Hotel, a boutique establishment in Stavanger, features a revitalized 1937 functionalist warehouse, maintaining the essence of its original architecture while offering contemporary amenities.
Hotel Union Øye, a historic hideaway by the Hjørundfjord, has been a source of inspiration for mountaineers, writers, and royalty since its opening in 1891. Hotel Brosundet, situated on Ålesund’s waterfront, is housed in a former fishery warehouse and offers an authentic experience in the Art Nouveau town. Lastly, Juvet Landscape Hotel, known for its striking architecture and appearances in popular media, features cabins with floor-to-ceiling windows that immerse guests in the surrounding wilderness.
Stein Ove Rolland, CEO of Fjord Norway, emphasized the significance of these awards, stating, “The MICHELIN Keys celebrate hotels with soul and substance – places that tell a story and connect guests to their surroundings.” He noted that the recognition of seven hotels in Fjord Norway reflects the region’s strong and authentic hospitality scene, showcasing a blend of historical heritage and modern design.
The MICHELIN Guide, renowned for its rigorous standards, evaluates hotels based on five key criteria: architecture and interior design, overall personality and character, quality and consistency of service, value for money, and the hotel’s contribution to its locality. This recognition not only highlights individual establishments but also underscores the growing appeal of Fjord Norway as a destination for travelers seeking unique and enriching experiences.
