In the past week, collegiate teams involving hundreds of students from around the world assembled at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California. Their mission? To showcase the highly energy-efficient, solar-powered houses they created to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2015. The October 8 opening ceremony, headlined by U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, kicked off the biennial event that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate houses powered by the sun.
