In a significant move towards promoting energy-efficient living, Rightmove, the UK’s largest property platform, has partnered with Octopus Energy, the country’s largest energy supplier. This collaboration aims to assist home buyers in finding properties that utilize green technology, reflecting a growing trend in the housing market where sustainability is becoming a key selling point.
Recent data from Rightmove indicates a notable shift in property listings, with mentions of heat pumps increasing by 46% and references to solar panels rising by 37% year-on-year. This trend suggests that both buyers and sellers are increasingly prioritizing energy efficiency and sustainable living solutions.
As part of their initiative, Rightmove is introducing a dedicated Zero Bills label for property listings. This label will allow developers to showcase homes that are powered by Octopus Energy’s innovative Zero Bills smart tariff. This unique energy tariff promises to eliminate home energy bills for a period of 5 to 10 years for properties equipped with advanced green technologies, such as heat pumps, solar panels, and battery storage.
According to Rightmove’s Energy Bills Tracker, home buyers who transition from a typical UK property, which generally has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, to a home with the Zero Bills label could save over £2,350 annually on energy costs. This substantial potential saving is likely to attract environmentally conscious buyers looking to reduce their carbon footprint and energy expenses.
Research conducted by Octopus Energy reveals that a significant majority of homeowners who have installed heat pumps are satisfied with their decision. Specifically, 90% of respondents expressed contentment with the switch, and 94% reported that their homes are as comfortable, if not more so, compared to their previous gas boiler systems.
Greg Jackson, the Founder and CEO of Octopus Energy, emphasized the growing awareness of energy-efficient options among homeowners, noting that many are now actively seeking properties equipped with solar panels and heat pumps. He expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Rightmove, stating that it will help prospective buyers identify greener homes that are increasingly becoming the norm.
Johan Svanstrom, CEO of Rightmove, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of guiding home movers towards a more sustainable future. He remarked on the partnership’s potential to enhance awareness and adoption of green technologies in the housing market.
As the demand for energy-efficient homes continues to rise, this collaboration between Rightmove and Octopus Energy marks a pivotal step in making sustainable living more accessible to millions of home buyers across the UK.
