After over 20 years in leading roles at ScottishPower, Alan’s new role will be pivotal in shaping SgurrEnergy for the challenges of the next decade, to ensure that the company’s success and growth continues.
Joining the workforce of over 180 global staff, Alan will inform and guide SgurrEnergy’s strategic direction and bring his decades of experience in the electricity supply industry to bear on SgurrEnergy’s future service and product offerings to the renewable energy sector.
Alan Mortimer 3Spending much of his career with a leading player in the UK wind market, ScottishPower, Alan has developed an outstanding reputation in the renewables industry. In his long-term role as head of wind development, Alan developed the strategy for, and then initiated the delivery of a substantial wind portfolio, including Whitelee Wind Farm, which at 517MW is Europe’s largest onshore wind farm.
In his subsequent role as head of policy for ScottishPower Renewables, Alan was responsible for managing policy and strategic issues whilst also identifying new business opportunities in renewables and in technology development programmes.
Technical director and founder of SgurrEnergy, Ian Irvine, said: “SgurrEnergy has always been ambitious and we strive to ensure that we are at the forefront of the renewables industry. We are delighted that Alan Mortimer is joining us in this pivotal role and we are looking forward to reaping the benefits of his experience and expertise in this industry.”
Speaking of his new role as director of innovation, Alan Mortimer said: “I am looking forward to embarking on this new challenge and using my experience to further shape SgurrEnergy as a leader in renewable energy consultancy. My years at ScottishPower, part of the global wind leader Iberdrola, have been hugely rewarding thanks to the company’s ambitious approach to renewables development, and strong support for innovation. This new role with SgurrEnergy will allow me to extend my activities to address the fascinating range of challenges which the sector as a whole must address, as renewables moves to ever larger scale deployment here in the UK and around the globe.
I have to say it’s great to be working alongside Ian Irvine again, 20 years after first working together early in our careers. I am embracing the opportunity to contribute to a hugely successful Scottish business with a global presence and huge potential for growth and international development.”
SgurrEnergy, part of Wood Group, is no stranger to new recruits. In August last year, it announced plans to double its Glasgow-based workforce to 180 staff as part of a three-year expansion plan, a growth target which is already well on its way to realisation.
With existing offices in Ireland, France, USA, Canada, India and China, the company announced, at the end of 2012, the opening of two new international offices in Brazil and Norway, to cater for the growing consultancy needs in these markets. In early 2013, SgurrEnergy launched its German office to provide a local, on the ground team of experts to work in the German renewables market, bringing the total number of international offices to nine.
From small Scottish beginnings, SgurrEnergy has spread the reach of its renewables expertise to create an impressive track record. The team has worked on projects in over 50 countries, across six continents and has now assessed over 110GW of renewable energy projects globally.
