CHICAGO – Sept. 30, 2019 – Today, Navigant (NYSE: NCI) announced the winners of the Generation Knowledge Service (GKS) Plant Operational Excellence Awards. The awards recognize power plants that have demonstrated excellence in cost and operational management, as well as improved performance and reliability.

Eligible coal plants were separated into two classes based on average utilization. The top and runner-up plants for each category are:

High-Utilization – > = 70% Average Utilization Index

  • Top performer: Naughton Power Station, located near Kemmerer, Wyoming – PacifiCorp
  • Runner-up: Hunter Power Station, located near Castle Dale, Utah – PacifiCorp

Low-Utilization – < 70% Average Utilization Index

  • Top performer: George Neal Station, located near Sergeant Bluff, Iowa – MidAmerican Energy Company
  • Runner-up: Belews Creek Steam Station, located on Belews Lake in Stokes County, North Carolina – Duke Energy

Top and Runner-up Combined Cycle Plants

  • Top performer: Current Creek Power Station, located in Mona, Utah – PacifiCorp
  • Runner-up: Plant Barry located in Mobile County, Alabama – operated by Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company

“For plant operators today, market needs have become increasingly demanding. In addition to the need for reliability and low cost, the new dimension of flexibility required in a market with larger amounts of variable generation tests the ingenuity of plant operators,” says Dale Probasco, managing director of Global Generation Services at Navigant. “Doing more with less is a constant theme, and these plants have demonstrated the ability to meet changing needs with fewer resources. It is our pleasure to recognize this achievement and the ability of these plant teams to meet the industry’s ongoing challenges.”

The GKS Plant Operational Excellence Awards are based on a review of cost and performance data over the most recent five-year period (2014-2018).

Winners were selected after a detailed analysis of cost and performance data from Navigant’s industry-leading GKS database, which contains data on more than 230,000 MW of coal-fired generation and nearly 87,000 MW of combined cycle generation. The analysis of cost and performance includes a weighted comparison of non-fuel operation and maintenance costs and availability and reliability measures during the evaluation period. Winners must also finish in the top half for safety performance.
