Natural Power, a consultancy specializing in renewable energy, has announced the appointment of Gordon Burrows as the new Head of ControlCentre. Burrows, who officially joined the company on October 1, 2025, brings over 20 years of experience in power systems operations, planning, and control to the role. His previous positions include senior leadership roles at SP Energy Networks and Northern Powergrid, where he managed a 24/7 control center in Yorkshire.
In his new position, Burrows will lead the UK’s largest independent renewable energy control room, which is crucial for managing the operational aspects of renewable energy assets across the country. The ControlCentre is based at Natural Power’s headquarters in Castle Douglas, Dumfries & Galloway, and currently oversees 11.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy assets, including a significant portion of the UK’s onshore wind capacity, offshore projects, and battery storage.
Matthew Kelly, Head of Operations & Asset Management at Natural Power, emphasized the importance of Burrows’ appointment at a time when the ControlCentre is scaling up to meet the UK’s renewable energy targets. He noted that Burrows has a proven track record in managing control centers and driving innovation, which will be essential as the facility prepares for upcoming grid reforms and the increasing demands of the clean energy transition.
Burrows’ responsibilities will include overseeing the introduction of new software platforms and guiding the operations team to adapt to the evolving energy landscape. He expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to lead the ControlCentre, highlighting its role in providing critical oversight of the UK’s clean energy infrastructure.
Natural Power’s ControlCentre not only plays a vital role in managing renewable energy assets but also aims to enhance its capacity and capabilities to address the challenges posed by a rapidly changing grid and energy security requirements. With plans for further growth in staff numbers, the ControlCentre is positioned to continue its significant contribution to the UK’s renewable energy sector.
