Investments totaling ₹1,850 crore have been pledged in the biogas sector during the Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo 2024, which took place from October 3 to 5 in Greater Noida, according to a senior official from the Indian Biogas Association (IBA).
IBA Chairman Gaurav Kedia informed PTI that the association secured these anticipated investment commitments through joint ventures (JVs), memorandums of understanding (MoUs), and letters of intent (LoIs) at the expo.
The event featured 47 exhibitors from 10 countries involved in biogas production.
Kedia noted that these investments, expected to be realized over the next 2 to 3 years, demonstrate significant international interest, particularly from nations like Germany, Sweden, and the UK.
“We have signed MoUs worth over ₹900 crore for joint ventures and received nearly 50 LoIs for the establishment of compressed biogas plants in India,” he stated.
Established in 2011 and restructured in 2015, the IBA acts as a national platform for bioenergy operators, manufacturers, and planners, collaborating with international bodies such as the German Biogas Association to foster the growth of the biogas sector in India.
The REI Expo, one of India’s largest renewable energy gatherings, covers a range of topics including bioenergy, solar energy, wind energy, electric vehicles, and energy efficiency technologies.
Backed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and prominent industry stakeholders, the Bio-Energy Pavilion 2024 aimed to expedite India’s journey toward net-zero emissions.
IBA President Dr. A. R. Shukla remarked on the success of this year’s expo, pointing out that the MNRE’s active involvement, along with scientists from the Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE) in Kapurthala, has bolstered confidence in the bioenergy sector.
Shukla also stressed the importance of focusing on bioenergy due to its comprehensive advantages, which could unlock potential for energy self-sufficiency. He emphasized that with appropriate policy support, the bioenergy industry could completely replace fossil fuels.
