Innovative Heat Pump Replacement at The Apex Theatre by Zeuner

October 15, 2026 · · World of Renewables

A West Midlands-based renewable energy firm, Zeuner, has successfully completed the installation of a bespoke heat pump system at The Apex, a prominent live music and entertainment venue located in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. This upgrade has not only modernised the theatre’s heating system but has also resulted in significant time and cost savings for the venue.

Challenges of the Installation

The Apex, which is part of the Arc shopping centre development, was constructed in 2009 on the site of a former cattle market. The venue is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, designed to enhance the experience of live performances. However, the installation of a new heat pump system presented unique challenges, particularly due to the difficulty of accessing the roof where the old system was located.

Innovative Solutions by Zeuner

To address these challenges, Zeuner devised an innovative solution. The company created a ‘carbon copy’ of the space in their Coventry workshop, allowing them to construct the new heat pump system to the exact specifications required. Once the system was built, it was disassembled and transported to The Apex for installation.

Expert Insights from Zeuner’s Founder

Chris Reilly, the founder of Zeuner, commented on the complexity of the project, stating, “It was a massive undertaking to take out the old system and install the more efficient design in its place. Understanding that we could not use a crane for the installation, we designed the system to be dismantled into manageable sections that could be transported and installed by our team.” This approach not only facilitated the installation but also mitigated risks associated with working on-site.

Benefits of the New Heat Pump System

The new heat pump system is expected to deliver substantial cost savings and improve the operational efficiency of The Apex. Reilly highlighted that the off-site construction in a controlled environment significantly reduced the risks typically associated with on-site installations. He noted, “The result has been a significant cost saving and de-risking of the operational building.”

Moreover, Reilly emphasised the advantages of tailored heat pump solutions, stating that they can meet specific building load requirements while also contributing to sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals. He explained that such systems often qualify for tax incentives and can bypass the need for planning permissions, making them an attractive option for many organisations.

Optimisation and Sustainability

One of the key benefits of Zeuner’s bespoke systems is the reduction in material wastage. Unlike standardised systems that may not be optimally designed for a building’s unique proportions, Zeuner’s solutions are crafted specifically for each site from the outset. This tailored approach not only ensures better performance but also minimises the environmental impact by using less material overall.

Conclusion

The successful installation of the new heat pump system at The Apex Theatre exemplifies how innovative engineering solutions can overcome significant logistical challenges. By prioritising efficiency and sustainability, Zeuner has not only enhanced the operational capabilities of the venue but has also set a precedent for future renewable energy projects in the arts and entertainment sector.
