Foresight Group, a prominent infrastructure and private capital investment manager, has announced the successful acquisition of a 100% interest in the Nivala battery energy storage system (BESS) from Fotowatio Renewable Ventures. This acquisition marks a significant milestone as Nivala is recognised as Finland’s largest BESS project.

### Overview of the Nivala Project

The Nivala BESS is a fully permitted and ready-to-build project located in the city of Nivala, situated in the North Ostrobothnia region of Finland. With a substantial capacity of 100MW/400MWh, the facility is designed to enhance grid flexibility and support the integration of renewable energy sources into the Finnish power system. The project is expected to commence commercial operations in the latter half of 2028.

Foresight’s investment in Nivala is its second venture in Finland, following the acquisition of the Puskakorpi project, an 88MW facility, in 2021 through its first fund, FEIP I. This latest acquisition strengthens Foresight Energy Infrastructure Partners II (FEIP II) by increasing its exposure to energy storage solutions, which are crucial for managing the fluctuating supply and demand of electricity.

### The Importance of Battery Energy Storage

The Nivala BESS is designed to operate with a four-hour duration, allowing it to participate in various markets, including wholesale, intraday, and ancillary services. These markets are vital revenue drivers for battery energy storage systems in Finland. The ability to provide grid flexibility is increasingly important as the country aims to decarbonise its energy system and integrate more renewable energy sources.

Richard Thompson, Partner and Co-Manager of FEIP & FEIP II at Foresight Group, emphasised the critical role of battery storage in the energy transition. He stated, “The energy transition is no longer only about decarbonisation; it is increasingly about maintaining system security, reliability, and resilience as electricity demand grows and economies become more electrified.” He highlighted that with the rise in investment in data centres and new industrial demands in Finland, grid-scale battery storage will become essential for providing flexibility and stability to the grid.

### Finland’s Growing Demand for Energy Storage

Finland has emerged as a highly attractive market for battery energy storage systems in the Nordic region, driven by rapid growth in renewable energy, particularly from onshore wind sources. The country is also witnessing a surge in demand for electricity, partly due to significant investments in data centres. Notably, Google has announced plans to invest €13 billion in data centres across Finland, further amplifying the need for enhanced grid flexibility and energy storage solutions.

### Strategic Insights from Fotowatio Renewable Ventures

Javier Huergo, Chief Investment Officer of Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), commented on the strategic implications of the transaction. He noted that the sale of the Nivala project reflects FRV’s capability to create value throughout the development cycle of its projects. Huergo stated, “This transaction allows us to crystallise the value generated during the development phases and reinvest those resources in new opportunities that will continue to drive the energy transition and strengthen our international BESS project portfolio.”

### Foresight’s Broader BESS Portfolio

With the addition of the Nivala project, Foresight’s battery energy storage system portfolio across Europe now encompasses approximately 550 MW of operational capacity. This expansion underscores Foresight’s commitment to investing in critical infrastructure that supports the transition to a more sustainable energy future.

### Conclusion

The acquisition of the Nivala BESS by Foresight Group represents a significant step forward in enhancing energy storage capabilities in Finland. As the country continues to invest in renewable energy and data centre infrastructure, projects like Nivala will play a pivotal role in ensuring grid stability and supporting the integration of clean energy sources. The strategic investments made by both Foresight and Fotowatio Renewable Ventures highlight the growing importance of battery energy storage in the evolving energy landscape of Europe.
