Fleete, a provider of fleet charging solutions, has unveiled a new Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculator aimed at facilitating discussions around the economic viability of electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) compared to their diesel counterparts. This tool comes at a critical time as global conversations about electrification and sustainability intensify, particularly with the onset of COP30.
The TCO calculator is designed to be user-friendly and serves as an open-source resource for industry stakeholders. It allows users to analyze various cost factors associated with electric and diesel HGVs, including vehicle purchase prices, energy costs, maintenance, and regulatory impacts. By enabling users to modify key variables, the calculator aims to provide a comprehensive view of how different factors influence the total cost of ownership.
Chris Morrison, CEO of Fleete, emphasized the importance of this tool in the context of the UK’s current energy landscape, which has seen some of the highest energy costs in the G7. He noted that while the business case for electric HGVs is improving, the UK still lags behind other European nations like the Netherlands and Germany, where stricter emissions regulations and stronger incentives have facilitated faster adoption of electric vehicles.
Morrison pointed out that targeted policy measures could significantly enhance the competitiveness of electric HGVs. He suggested that adjustments to electricity non-commodity costs, Vehicle Excise Duty, and vehicle weight regulations could help bridge the cost gap between electric and diesel options.
The TCO calculator also includes built-in scenarios that allow users to visualize the effects of proposed policy changes and carbon pricing on the overall cost of ownership for both types of vehicles. By making this tool freely available, Fleete aims to foster a collaborative environment where industry players can share insights and develop a unified approach to achieving cost parity.
The calculator is now available for download on Fleete’s website, marking a significant step towards supporting the transition to electric HGVs and contributing to broader sustainability goals in the transport sector.
