E.ON Pelamis P2 machine successfully installed.
On Sunday 10th October 2010, PWP successfully installed the E.ON Pelamis P2 machine on its moorings at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney. The operation went smoothly and the Pelamis was latched to its moorings within half an hour of arriving on site. That afternoon PWP O&M Engineer Sigurd Thompson from Hoy in Orkney started the first generator to begin electricity generation to the UK grid network.
This initial period of operation is primarily to prove the installation and removal process, commission the site, and confirm satisfactory operation of all machine systems. This is the first stage of a progressive machine ‘work-up’ programme that will lead to full unrestricted operations once full system functionality and reliability are confirmed. PWP & E.ON anticipate that this first deployment will last for 3-5 days. Subsequent installations over the coming weeks and months will combine progressive exposure to more aggressive sea states with regular offsite inspection periods.
