This week, the African nations of Eswatini and Namibia have both initiated digital portals for rooftop solar applications.
Eswatini’s Embedded Generation Application Platform
In Eswatini, the Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA) has launched an embedded generation application platform that accommodates applications for installations up to 2 MW. This platform facilitates the processing of applications, supply licensing, and the registration of solar PV installers. More information can be found on ESERA’s official website.
The platform was unveiled during the 2026 edition of Eswatini’s international trade fair. At the launch, ESERA CEO Skhumbuzo Tsabedze remarked that the platform aims to enhance transparency and accountability, boost efficiency, lessen administrative burdens, and broaden access to embedded generation participation. Tsabedze stated, “We are not simply launching a digital platform. We are launching an enabler of Eswatini’s energy transition and a practical tool that supports greater participation in the green economy.”
Namibia’s Online Platform for Small-Scale Embedded Generation
In Namibia, the Electricity Control Board (ECB) has introduced its online platform for small-scale embedded generation applications as of September 1. This platform, which has its own dedicated website, caters to installations up to 500 kW.
A statement from the ECB indicates that this service will streamline the application process, allowing citizens to apply, track, and connect their energy systems to the grid more efficiently. Ana-Beatriz Martins, Head of the EU Delegation to Namibia, highlighted that this development will aid in maintaining grid security and safeguarding customers, adding that “Digitalisation can make regulating the sector more transparent.”
Significance of the Launches
The introduction of these portals positions Eswatini and Namibia among the pioneering countries in Africa to establish digital platforms for small-scale solar applications. South Africa is another example, operating an application portal for installations up to 1 MW.
According to the Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA), Eswatini currently has 30.1 MW of operational solar capacity, with an additional 123.2 MW under construction. In Namibia, the association reports 1.49 GW of operational solar capacity, with 985 MW in the commercial and industrial sector, and an extra 211.3 MW under construction.
