Wind power is a feasible renewable energy option for water companies.

An environmental expert from international consultancy, WYG will explain how wind power is a feasible renewable energy option for water companies that can help them reduce their carbon footprint at the annual European Water & Wastewater Management (EWWM) conference in Leeds next week.

The annual two-day EWWM conference, which takes place on 27-28 September, will address how the industry is gearing up to environmental challenges by both increasing the efficiency of existing technology, whilst pushing forward with the development of more novel approaches.

The event, entitled ‘Reducing the Environmental Impact of the Water Industry’, will take place at the Royal Armouries in Leeds and over 200 international representatives from water companies, consultancies, technical associations, universities, research establishments, process suppliers, Government departments and agencies are expected to attend.

WYG’s, Dr Steve Mustow, an environmental specialist with over 20 years in the field, will present a paper he has written addressing “the potential for utilising large-scale wind generation on water industry land”. The paper highlights how wind power can help reduce the water industry’s carbon footprint and support renewable energy generation.

Steve said: “The European water industry manages and owns a significant property portfolio which offers the opportunity to generate renewable energy. Of the renewable energy technologies currently available, wind turbines are one of the most reliable and capable of generating the greatest energy output per unit of investment.”

Steve is a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and a Chartered Environmentalist. He has been closely involved in many projects carried out by WYG for wind farm developers.

Sam Murdock, Director and Head of WYG’s water & wastewater division will also be attending the event. Sam commented: “The event provides a beneficial opportunity for key industry representatives to get together to address the issues facing the sector at the present time.”
