Green FOX Energy has officially started the construction of a new solar park in Oberthal, located in the St. Wendel district of Saarland. The project, which boasts a capacity of approximately 7 megawatts peak (MWp), is set to contribute significantly to the region’s renewable energy goals. Upon completion, anticipated for the second quarter of 2026, the solar park will generate around 7,700 megawatt-hours (MWh) of fossil-free electricity each year, providing power for more than 2,200 households.
The initiative aligns with local efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, with Tobias Aulich, Managing Director of Green FOX Energy, emphasizing the project’s role in helping the St. Wendel district become the first CO2-neutral district in Saarland. The solar park is part of a broader strategy to decentralize the energy grid and promote the transition to renewable energy sources.
Sven Meißner, another Managing Director at Green FOX Energy, highlighted the dual benefits of such solar parks, noting their economic viability for both investors and consumers. This project comes at a time when Germany is making strides in increasing its renewable energy share, which reached 54.4% of the gross electricity consumption in 2024, up from 52.9% in 2023.
The German government has set ambitious targets for renewable energy, aiming for an 80% share in electricity production by 2030 and a fully climate-neutral electricity sector by 2035. To meet these objectives, the share of renewable electricity generation must double to approximately 600 terawatt-hours by 2030, accommodating the growing demands of electrification in heating and transportation sectors.
Green FOX Energy, based in Hamburg, is an independent investor and operator of renewable energy facilities, focusing on the development of solar and wind energy projects. The company aims to contribute to a sustainable energy future while ensuring stable returns through long-term power purchase agreements and fixed feed-in tariffs. This project in Oberthal represents a significant step towards achieving Germany’s climate goals and enhancing the local energy landscape.
