14 January 2019 – 10 million people will gain energy access following a deal between BBOXX, a next generation utility platform, and Africa Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM). AIIM, though its AIIF3 fund, is investing USD 31 million for a minority stake in BBOXX’s operations in Rwanda, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). World-first in grid-scale pumped heat energy storage places UK at forefront of energy storage R&D, team claims. Pumped heat energy storage (PHES) shuffles heat between two tanks containing mineral gravel by means of a working gas, generally an inert gas such as argon. In storage mode, the argon is pressurised to around 12 bar, which heats it up to 500°C.
