On November 3, 2026, INO-HUB Energy, a Slovak technology innovator, showcased its proprietary commercial prototype of a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) during its inaugural Tech Day event in Bratislava. This event attracted representatives from the European Commission and aimed to highlight the company’s advancements in energy storage technology, particularly for industrial and energy infrastructure applications.

Significance of the Prototype Unveiling

The introduction of the vanadium flow battery prototype marks a pivotal moment for INO-HUB Energy. Rudolf Sihlovec, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasised the importance of transitioning technologies from laboratory research to practical applications in the industry. He stated, “Our goal is not to keep technologies at the laboratory research stage, but to turn them into practical solutions for industry and the energy sector.” This aligns with the growing demand for enhanced energy storage capacity across Europe, particularly as the continent seeks to integrate more renewable energy sources into its grid.

Addressing Energy Storage Needs in Europe

The development of effective energy storage solutions is crucial for Europe’s energy transition. By improving the utilisation of renewable energy sources, these technologies contribute to the stability of electricity systems and bolster energy security. INO-HUB Energy’s research project has been recognised by the European Commission as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), underscoring its significance in the broader context of European energy initiatives.

Peter Stano, Head of the European Commission Representation in Slovakia, remarked on the project’s potential, stating, “The transition to clean and sustainable energy is one of the European Union’s main priorities. However, to fully harness the potential of renewable energy sources, we need innovative solutions that ensure the stability and safety of our energy networks.” He further noted that the project benefits from over €17 million in European funding, which is instrumental in developing breakthrough technologies in Slovakia.

Advantages of Vanadium Flow Battery Technology

Vanadium redox flow batteries present a viable alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries, particularly in terms of safety and longevity. The technology utilises a water-based electrolyte containing vanadium salts, allowing for independent sizing of energy capacity and power output. This flexibility enables tailored solutions to meet specific customer requirements.

One of the standout features of vanadium flow batteries is their extended service life, which can exceed 25 years under optimal conditions. Additionally, these batteries can undergo numerous charging and discharging cycles without significant capacity degradation. The inherent safety of this technology is another major advantage, as it eliminates risks associated with thermal runaway and explosions, common concerns with other battery types.

Sihlovec explained the economic benefits of vanadium batteries, stating, “When the secondary use of the electrolyte is considered, this cost is comparable to that of other electrochemical energy storage technologies.” This perspective is increasingly relevant as Europe’s energy landscape evolves, with a report from SolarPower Europe indicating that the continent’s total operational battery storage capacity surpassed 100 GWh by the end of 2025, with projections suggesting it could reach 582 GWh by 2030.

Integration with Intelligent Energy Management Systems

INO-HUB Energy is not only focused on battery development but also on creating intelligent energy management solutions. The company’s AORTA+ software employs artificial intelligence to simulate, optimise, and manage energy systems. This software analyses customers’ electricity generation and consumption patterns, using the data to design tailored solutions that enhance energy efficiency and reduce operational costs.

During the Tech Day event, INO-HUB Energy also demonstrated the practical applications of its technologies in industrial contexts, showcasing how its battery storage systems can optimise the operation of renewable energy sources and support the stability of electricity distribution networks.

Future Developments and Collaborations

Founded in 2019, INO-HUB Energy has established itself as a key player in the development of advanced battery technologies. The company collaborates with several academic institutions, including Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, the Technical University of Košice, and the University of Žilina, to advance the next generation of flow batteries. Their research efforts focus on enhancing battery reliability and efficiency.

Looking ahead, INO-HUB Energy plans to construct a manufacturing facility in Kysucké Nové Mesto, which has received the necessary building permits and completed detailed construction design documentation. This facility will be dedicated to the research, development, and production of battery assemblies and power units, further solidifying the company’s commitment to innovation in energy storage solutions.

Conclusion

INO-HUB Energy’s unveiling of its vanadium flow battery prototype represents a significant advancement in energy storage technology, with the potential to enhance the stability and efficiency of renewable energy systems across Europe. As the demand for reliable and safe energy storage solutions continues to grow, INO-HUB Energy is well-positioned to contribute to the continent’s energy transition and sustainability goals.
