Foresight Group, a prominent infrastructure and private capital investment manager, has announced an expansion of its joint venture with Belltown Power UK Limited, a clean energy company known for its innovative project development in the UK. This collaboration aims to enhance Belltown RePower, the joint venture’s dedicated arm for repowering onshore wind farms across the UK.

Focus on Repowering and Clean Energy Capacity

The primary objective of this expanded partnership is to deliver at least 500 megawatts (MW) of clean energy capacity through the repowering and enhancement of older onshore wind farms in the UK. Belltown RePower is anchored by five initial repowering projects, which include the Bowbeat Repowering and Cruach Mhor Repowering initiatives located in Scotland, alongside three additional sites situated in southern Scotland and England. Collectively, these projects currently possess an operational capacity of approximately 125 MW, with significant potential for further expansion.

Modernising Wind Energy Infrastructure

The repowering process involves replacing existing turbines with fewer but larger and more efficient modern turbines. This strategy aims to maximise the utilisation of some of the UK’s most productive wind energy sites. In addition to the current projects, Foresight and Belltown are actively seeking to incorporate more repowering initiatives into their portfolio while also exploring new greenfield onshore wind opportunities, particularly in England and Wales.

Combining Expertise for Sustainable Development

The joint venture leverages Belltown’s development expertise alongside Foresight’s capital and asset management capabilities. This collaboration is designed to effectively support the establishment of new low-cost, clean energy infrastructure throughout the UK, ultimately benefiting both investors and consumers.

Strategic Insights from Leadership

Chris Tanner, a Partner at Foresight, expressed enthusiasm about the venture, stating, “Belltown RePower positions Foresight at the forefront of what we believe will be a critical and highly interesting UK onshore wind development strategy over the next decade. Repowering offers a differentiated and efficient route into a scarce part of the UK renewables market, particularly at a time when conventional early-stage development has become increasingly challenging. This is precisely the kind of specialist, structured development exposure where Foresight’s market knowledge, disciplined governance, and established relationship with Belltown can add significant value.”

Paul Hewett, CEO of Belltown Power UK, echoed Tanner’s sentiments, highlighting the productive relationship between the two companies. He stated, “Our highly productive relationship with Foresight continues to allow us to rapidly develop next generation infrastructure that will be critical to delivering a low-cost, secure and clean future energy system for the UK. Repowering, expanding and optimising aging sites is crucial to that mission and our innovative strategy has placed Belltown RePower at the forefront of onshore wind repowering in the UK.”

Conclusion

The expansion of the joint venture between Foresight Group and Belltown Power marks a significant step towards enhancing the UK’s onshore wind capacity through repowering initiatives. By focusing on modernising existing infrastructure and exploring new opportunities, the partnership aims to contribute to the UK’s transition to a more sustainable energy future. As the demand for clean energy continues to rise, initiatives like Belltown RePower will play a crucial role in meeting the energy needs of the nation while supporting environmental goals.
