The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) is set to introduce a phased approach to producer fees, with producers exempt from fees for the first 15 months. This initiative, announced by the scheme administrator Exchange For Change, is scheduled to commence in October 2027.
Travis Way, Managing Director at EcoVend by Reconomy, emphasised the importance of collaboration within the industry to ensure the scheme’s success in reducing litter and improving recycling rates for single-use containers. He noted that the additional time without fees would facilitate a smoother rollout, allowing businesses to establish the necessary infrastructure and processes to enhance participation and achieve the required return rates for a more circular economy.
