In a recent announcement, Octopus Electric Vehicles has unveiled its list of the top five electric vehicles (EVs) for the third quarter of 2025. The OMODA E5 continues to lead the rankings, maintaining its position from the previous quarter. However, European manufacturers have made significant strides, with models from Renault, Volkswagen, and Mercedes entering the spotlight.
The OMODA E5’s popularity is attributed to its competitive pricing and high specifications, making it a favored choice among UK consumers. Following closely are the Mercedes EQB, Volkswagen ID.3, Tesla Model Y, and the newly introduced Renault 5, which has gained attention partly due to the UK Government’s Electric Car Grant (ECG) that enhances affordability for buyers.
The recent surge in battery-electric vehicle registrations highlights a growing consumer confidence in the UK EV market. In September alone, battery-electric vehicles accounted for 23.2% of new car registrations, with nearly 70,000 units sold, marking the second-highest monthly total in the country’s history. This trend underscores a shift towards cleaner and more economical driving options, driven by government incentives and advancements in EV technology.
Alvin Castillo, Procurement Director and EV expert at Octopus Electric Vehicles, commented on the evolving landscape of the UK EV market. He noted that the ECG has provided a sense of policy stability, encouraging consumers to consider electric options more seriously. Castillo emphasized that the expanding variety of EVs now available offers consumers better value compared to traditional combustion vehicles, particularly when factoring in long-term fuel savings.
The inclusion of the Mercedes EQB in the top five is significant, as it is a premium seven-seater vehicle priced competitively under £500 per month through salary sacrifice schemes. This model appeals to families seeking luxury without compromising on space or budget. The Renault 5, recently awarded the title of ‘2025 European Car of the Year,’ also stands out for its affordability and modern design, further solidifying its position in the market.
Looking ahead to the fourth quarter of 2025, Castillo highlighted several upcoming models that could disrupt the current rankings. The JAECOO J5 EV is generating buzz for its luxury features at a lower price point, while the Geely EX5, entering the UK market this October, promises a tech-rich experience at a competitive price. Additionally, the revival of the Nissan Micra as a pure EV is set to attract a new demographic of drivers.
As the UK continues to embrace electric vehicles, Octopus Electric Vehicles is also expanding its offerings, including a salary sacrifice scheme that allows drivers to save significantly on public EV charging costs. This initiative aims to make electric driving more accessible and financially viable for a broader audience, further supporting the transition to sustainable transport in the UK.
