During the “International Aviation and Climate Change” event held as part of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) President Samir Rzayev discussed efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation and energy sectors, reports APA.

“We produce crude oil with 9.6 kilograms of CO2 emissions per barrel, while the global average is 32 kilograms per barrel,” Rzayev said, drawing attention to the progress made in reducing environmental impact.

He also pointed to the growing fuel needs of the aviation industry. “Currently, aviation uses 6.3 million barrels of jet fuel daily, and this number is expected to increase to 8.3 million barrels. That’s 2 million more barrels needed each day. By 2035, projections suggest that only 600,000 barrels of this could come from Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF),” he said.

Rzayev emphasized that low-carbon aviation fuel (LCAF) could play a significant role in meeting these demands. He called it an achievable goal and noted that it could encourage the oil and gas industry to further reduce its carbon emissions.
