The new long-term contract, which Geminor won through an official tendering process, binds the resource management company to deliver a total of 85 000 tonnes of Municipal mixed waste and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) to the Estonian energy company Enefit Green. The contract has a duration of three years. Waste fuels will be shipped mainly from Turku and Helsinki areas.
Enefit Green, which is situated outside of Tallinn, is one of the largest producers of renewable energy in the Baltic countries. Being part of the international energy group Eesti Energia, Enefit Green produces electricity and heat from wind, water, solar energy and biomass – as well as providing district heating from waste-to-energy facilities.
Country Manager for Geminor in Finland, Ismo Hiltunen, comments on the partnership.
– We are very happy to continue delivering secondary fuels from Finland to Estonia, and are satisfied to see that deliveries and logistics are working successfully to plan. This contract secures Geminor the necessary capacity to maintain our total levels of waste exports from Finland. There is still a lack of incineration capacity in Finland, and Estonian import is a big help to this challenge. Logistics is the key – helped by proximity and a reliable ferry connection between Helsinki and Tallinn making Estonia most attractive for Geminor and the Finnish waste market, says Ismo Hiltunen.
