The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) has announced up to $15 million in federal funding to make clean hydrogen a more available and affordable fuel for electricity generation, industrial decarbonization, and transportation.Specifically, the funding opportunity will support research and development projects that convert feedstocks — such as coal, biomass, petcoke, household waste, industrial wastes, and waste plastics — into synthesis gas, also known as syngas, to enable the low-cost production of clean hydrogen.“Increasing the use of low-carbon fuels like clean hydrogen in the industrial and power sectors will help meet our ambitious…

There has been a rapid expansion in growing crops such as maize to produce biomethane as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, to help reach net-zero. But some of this increased cultivation, on drained peat, is emitting three times more carbon dioxide than it is avoiding by not using natural gas, according to a study by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH).The researchers also estimate the area of UK peatland used for cultivating maize, which is then put through an anaerobic digester to produce biomethane, has tripled since 2015.But they say the emissions resulting from draining these carbon-rich…

Nordex has received its first major order for the N175/6.X turbines in the Baltic states. The 16 turbines ordered are for Sia Laflora Energy’s 108.8 MW Laflora[1] wind farm project, located in the south-west of Riga, Latvia, and will be the cold climate version of the N175/6.X range. The turbines will be installed on Nordex’s in-house developed hybrid towers with hub heights of 179 metres. The Sia Laflora Energy order is the first in Latvia for Nordex and the first major order for the N175/6.X turbine in the Baltic states, the German turbine manufacturer said. As well as the supply and installation of 16 turbines, the contract…

Due to the large hub height of 200 metres, Nordex said the turbine’s rotor, with a diameter of 175 metres, moves in wind currents with much higher speeds and less turbulence. This makes it “advantageous” in locations with lower wind speeds, according to the company.  The tower is based on the design of the Nordex hybrid tower made of steel and concrete, which was developed in-house and has been successfully tested in 2024 with two prototypes and a complete wind farm in Finland[1]. Nordex is now set to start series production of the N175/6.X turbine[2], having just been granted a provisional type certificate for the model. The company said the…
