The opportunity to share strategies and deliver waste management solutions to the region.
The Middle East Waste Summit has been developed by the Dubai Municipality as an active response to the waste management challenges facing cities in the GCC.
The Opportunity
GCC countries produce a burdensome 120 million tonnes of waste every year, largely due to the rapid urbanisation, high population growth rates, diversified cultures, floating populations and high consumption practices of many cities in the region. While the United Arab Emirates is among the biggest regional waste producers, recent years have been witness to the country’s proactive response to its responsibilities, particularly through strategic partnerships with its private sector. In 2009 alone, the region’s largest medical waste treatment plant opened in Dubai, a US$300 million contract was awarded for the operation of a demolition waste facility in Abu Dhabi and another to rebuild and operate a tyre recycling plant in Al Ain.
2009 also saw the inaugural Middle East Waste Summit, developed by the Dubai Municipality, in an effort to share strategies, explore global best practice and find companies who can deliver innovative waste management solutions to the region. From Government representatives needing to address future policy to Office Managers wanting to start a recycling campaign, the 2009 Summit attracted 2,691 industry professionals from 53 countries.
The success of the 2009 event paved the way for Dubai Municipality to once again present the Middle East Waste Summit in Dubai between 18-20 May 2010, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance & Industry and Chairman of Dubai Municipality.
