“The Lower Colorado River Authority has secured a contract to build a $750 million piece of a major wind power transmission system. The Texas Public Utility Commission on Thursday announced contracts with seven utilities to build portions of the $5 billion transmission system that will bring electricity generated from West Texas wind power to the Houston and North Texas regions.
According to the PUC, while Texas uses more wind power than any other state, the existing transmission lines are nearing capacity. That, in part, has prompted the Competitive Renewable Energy Zone project, which aims to promote the state’s investment in renewable energy. The cross-state wind power transmission system is the next step in that project.
