Siemens Energy has received an order for 43 of its 2.3-MW SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines for the Greenwich wind energy project near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Purchaser is Renewable Energy Systems (RES) Canada Inc., an affiliate of RES Americas. Once completed, the wind farm with an installed capacity of about 100 megawatts (MW) is expected to provide clean power to more than 30,000 Canadian households. Siemens will begin installation of the 43 wind turbines in June 2011.
In November 2009, Siemens was also contracted to supply 43 SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines for RES Canada’s Talbot wind energy project near Chatham, Ontario. The scope for both wind energy plants includes supply and commissioning of the wind turbines, and a five-year service, maintenance and warranty agreement.
“Five wind turbine orders totaling nearly 600 MW received in Canada over the last six months clearly demonstrate the success we’ve experienced,” said Jan Kjaersgaard, vice president and general manager of Siemens Energy’s Americas wind business. “Including the two Canadian wind farms commissioned in 2008, Siemens wind turbines have the potential to provide clean power to approximately 240,000 Canadian households.”
Wind power is part of Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled approximately EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world’s largest supplier of environmentally friendly technologies. In the same period, the company’s products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
The Siemens Energy Sector is the world’s leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2009 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of approximately EUR25.8 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR30 billion and posted a profit of EUR3.3 billion. On September 30, 2009, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 85,100. Further information is available at:www.siemens.com/energy
