The first Siemens wind farm in Canada
has been connected to the power grid. At the official opening ceremonies on
November 13th, 44 of Siemens’ wind turbines were up and running in the Port
Alma Wind Power project located in the Municipality of Chatham
The wind farm with a total capacity of more than 100 Megawatts (MW) is
owned and operated by Kruger Energy Port Alma Limited Partnership, a member of
Kruger Inc.’s group of companies.
“Canada’s unprecedented growth in the wind energy market over the last
years is evidence that wind energy plays an important role in the overall
energy mix, alongside conventional power generation sources,” states Bill
Smith, senior vice president of the Siemens Energy Sector in Canada. “This
project marked the entry for Siemens in the wind energy market in Canada and
contributes to the remarkable growth it’s experiencing.”
“This is a key project for Kruger, and we are pleased to have selected
Siemens Wind Power as our partner,” said Jacques Gauthier, senior vice
president and COO, Kruger Energy.
According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association (CANWEA), Canada had
1,876 MWs of installed wind capacity in July 2008, enough to power 569,000
homes.
Siemens had supplied 44 of its 2.3-MW wind turbines to the Port Alma Wind
Power project . The wind turbine blades were manufactured at the Siemens Wind
Power facility in Aalborg, Denmark, and the nacelles and towers were sourced
from Denmark and China. In addition to wind turbine supply, Siemens also
provided tower installation and commissioning services, and will supply
maintenance and service for the next two years.
Wind power is one of the biggest contributors to Siemens’ environmental
portfolio. Since 2003, Siemens has installed wind power systems with a
combined capacity of more than 3,000 MW, which will save as much as eight
million tons of CO(2) per year.
